Three Decades of Slow Textile Artistry.
Ocean Art Collection was founded with a singular conviction: that handmade floor coverings from Bhadohi possess a living warmth no mechanized loom will ever duplicate.
Hand-weaving in our Bhadohi workshop. Every pass of yarn is compacted by hand.
The Carpet Capital of the World: Bhadohi.
Bhadohi, situated on the fertile plains of Uttar Pradesh between Varanasi and Prayagraj, has been the epicenter of hand-woven carpet craftsmanship in South Asia for over four centuries. Legend traces the region's weaving pedigree back to the sixteenth century under Emperor Akbar, when Persian master weavers settled along the Grand Trunk Road and shared their knotting disciplines with indigenous craftsmen.
In 1995, Ocean Art Collection established its weaving studio in Kashipur, Daropur, within Bhadohi. Rather than shifting to automated machines or synthetic latex backings, we chose to maintain authentic, low-impact artisan traditions: vertical wooden looms, manual yarn carding, pot dyeing, and hand shearing.
Today, our atelier supports more than 150 skilled hereditary artisans across Bhadohi and surrounding weaving clusters. Many of our master weavers have inherited their loom knowledge through three generations of family practice.
How Our Rugs Are Crafted
Tibetan Rod-Loop Knotting
Woven on vertical upright looms. The weaver winds yarn continuously around a metal rod placed across the warp. A knife blade slices along the rod to liberate dense, resilient tufts.
Persian & Senneh Knotting
Every knot is tied individually around adjacent warps by hand and severed with a curved crescent knife. Over one million knots per carpet, producing an heirloom of lifelong beauty.
Panja Flatweaving
Traditional Indian flatweave created without pile. Wool weft is tightly interlaced through cotton warp using a heavy five-pronged iron panja claw. Completely reversible and lightweight.
Honest Materials, Fair Artisan Welfare
Zero Synthetic Adhesives or Latex
Commercial tufted rugs use synthetic latex glue that dries out and releases microplastics. Our rugs are bound purely by knot tension and natural cotton threads. Completely biodegradable.
Generational Artisan Welfare
We adhere to strict ethical standards: fair wage compensation, clean workshop conditions, zero child labor, and flexible home-loom options for women weavers across rural Bhadohi.
Azo-Free & Eco-Certified Dyes
Our dye house uses non-toxic, Azo-free Swiss chrome dyes and botanical plant extracts (madder root, walnut shell, pomegranate peel, indigo).
Low Carbon Footprint
Hand-weaving consumes virtually zero electrical kilowatt energy compared to petrochemical carpet mills. From sheep shearing to loom weaving, our energy inputs are human-powered and regenerative.
